I have always been drawn to the narratives that shape our understanding of mental health.

Early in my career, I noticed a disconnect between how patients described their experiences and how those experiences were recorded in clinical language.

Someone who described watching life from the outside was documented as experiencing derealisation. A person who struggled to find the energy to brush their teeth was reduced to a diagnosis of low mood and functional impairment.

The medical record often stripped away the texture of suffering.

I kept wondering:

Would understanding a patient’s story—the way it was told—lead to better, more collaborative care?

This question led me into medical humanities and eventually to an AHRC-Funded PhD. Currently, I serve as a Visiting Research Fellow in Medical Humanities at UEA. I am particularly interested in how literature, drama and creative writing can shape clinical practice and enhance patient care. My current projects include creative writing in medical education, and the transformative practice of maternal grief-writing.
